What a year 2022 has been!

If you’d have told us at the end of 2021, what this year would include, for the most part we’d have never have believed you…

Alongside celebrating our 8th year providing grab hire, road sweeper and muck away services in Yorkshire, this year has also included some fantastic highlights.

It’s not been without its challenges as a result of the pandemic leading into record breaking energy price hikes, a cost-of-living crisis and war in Ukraine.

However, we’ve continue to grow the business, welcome new team members and clients, and support communities and charities in need.

Here are just a few of the highlights from a jam-packed year as we look back at 2022:

The Highlights

  • February – Random Act of Kindness Day:

In celebration of Random Act of Kindness Day we surprised teachers at the Kirk Fenton Primary School with an Afternoon Tea party. We love our community and are proud to be able to give back when and where we can.

  • May – First Female Apprentice Joins the Team:

We were delighted to take on our first female apprentice Neave from Wakefield College. She has been a brilliant addition to the mechanical team and look forward to seeing her career progress within the industry.

  • June – Total Warrior Challenge:

The lads got their sweat bands out in the summer taking on The Total Warrior Challenge to raise funds for The Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Even though it’s been a tough time for many, we managed to raise hundreds of pounds for the life-saving charity! Well done lads!

  • July – De-Fib Donation:

It was an absolute pleasure to provide a new defibrillator for the residents of Church Fenton. After a scare with one of our employees last year we wanted to make sure others could get access to the life-saving kit. Our donation meant the village now has access to three defibs for medical emergencies!

  • August – The One Show:

This month we had a visit from Britain’s strongest man, Paul Smith and his film crew, who came to the yard on the premise of creating content for his website! Little did we know if all a ruse to surprise us with a One Big Thank You from The One Show. A brilliant, emotional day with family and friends coming out for the big reveal. We even had some special messages from rugby legend Jonny Wilkinson and Paddy McGuinness!

  • October – BBC Radio York Make a Difference Awards:

We had a fantastic day attending the BBC Radio York Make A Difference Awards we were nominated in the ‘Good Neighbour’ category! As a finalist it was a pleasure having opportunity to celebrate with so many worthy nominees doing North Yorkshire proud – including Church Fenton’s Community Shop!

  • October – Foodbank Donation:

We were pleased to be able to donate £500 worth of selfcare items to our local Selby and District Foodbank who were in desperate need of support for their service users. Often these items are overlooked as donations. Project coordinator Cheryl said the items would make a huge difference to so many people really struggling at the moment. Glad we could help!

  • October – Top Gear Filming:

October was a busy month as we had the amazing opportunity to go watch the filming of Top Gear as a result of our appearance on The One Show. As specially invited guests of Paddy McGuiness, we were in the inner circle! We got to get up close with the three presenters and see some impressive cars too! You can catch a glimpse of our smiling faces across three episodes of the latest series!

  • November – Website Refresh:

As we’ve continued to grow and develop our grab hire, road sweeping and muck away services across Yorkshire, we felt the time was right to give our website a spruce up. The new site is a great showcase demonstrating everything you need to know about RJC Plant Services.

That’s  a wrap…nearly!

And, that’s almost it! As the year comes to a close, we can safely say 2022 has been packed! The team has continued to do us proud, providing plant hire services to councils, contractors, farmers, landscapers and local residents across Yorkshire.

We couldn’t do everything we do, without the support of a great team and look forward to seeing what 2023 has in store!

If you’re in need of muck away services, grab hire, aggregates or road sweeper services and are in North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire or South Yorkshire, get in touch.

RJC Plant Services have donated £500 worth of self-care products to support families in need following a call out for non-food related items by Selby and District Foodbank.

The Church Fenton based business, which has developed a strong reputation for supporting charities and the local community, purchased a range of self-care and cleaning products, including washing up tablets, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant.

Zena Jackson from RJC Plant Services said:

“We know how hard it is for people with the cost-of-living sky high and energy price rises meaning many are having to make difficult choices on what they can afford to buy. Foodbanks have become an essential resource and not just for food items as we discovered when we spoke to the Selby team. We wanted to do something to help the local community and really pleased we could support them in this way.”

Cheryl Whitton, Project Coordinator at Selby and District Foodbank adds:

“It’s important for us to focus on the whole person when they come to see us. October was Mental Health Awareness month and an important reminder how important it is to look after our overall wellbeing. Providing people with food is key but non-food items such as shampoo, shower gel, cleaning products, allow people to keep themselves and their homes clean and afford people a level of self-respect. This donation will no doubt help many people during these difficult times.”

RJC Plant Services, which provides grab hire and road sweeping services across Yorkshire, were recently awarded a One Big Thank You on BBC’s The One Show for their good deeds and random acts of kindness and were also a finalist in the BBC York Make A Difference Awards in the Great Neighbour Category.

Admittedly, a career in plant services or waste management is not going to be the top of everybody’s wish list at school. Many won’t really know what it is or what a career in the industry would involve. However, as a career option, it can provide an enjoyable and financially rewording job – especially for those who are looking for something that fits around family life and provides security, routine, and opportunities for growth.

RJC Plant Services has grown as a business considerably over the last 8 years. This has involved recruiting more and more qualified drivers to manage the grab wagons, tipper trucks and sweepers that make up our ‘plant services’ offer. The quality of our team is a big reason why we continue to be so successful and regularly achieve 5-star ratings from our customers.

As a business we promise no zero-hour contracts, local work, no nights away excellent rates of pay, 28 days holiday, uniform and training. We do lots of team events including socials and charity events to support the local community and we have incentive schemes to encourage business development. We have also recently taken on our first female apprentice who is working with our team of on-site mechanics.

In a recent survey by Randstad, they found the main attraction for people looking for a new job was one that offered work-life balance (65%). Job security received 61% and a pleasant work atmosphere, 55%. All of which we pride ourselves on here at RJC.

What skills and qualifications do you need to work in waste management and plant services?

There are several skills that are useful to have when working in plant services and waste management including:

• practical problem-solving ability
• strong communication, customer service and interpersonal skills
• negotiation skills
• the ability to manage pressure, work to deadlines and prioritise your workload
• organisational and planning skills
• the ability to use your initiative and to work independently
• teamworking skills
• a flexible approach to work

However, our main request is that you have a great attitude, be enthusiastic, be prepared to work as part of our team but be also able to work on your own initiative.

As we are certified waste management providers, an awareness of environmental issues, including an understanding of waste and recycling issues, and a willingness to keep up with relevant legislation is appreciated too.

Essential requirements for a driver role include:
• Class 2 Driving License
• Up to date CPC

A clean driving license is also preferred.

Recent years has seen a huge demand for qualified Category 2 drivers offering lots of job opportunities across the country. Achieving a Class 2 Driving License involves taking an additional driving course and test on top of a regular car driving license. It would also involve a basic medical test because of the safety precautions around driving a large vehicle. There is also a theory test to undertake before taking the practical exam. There are lots of course available, some offering training in only 5 days.

A Driver CPC stands for Driver Certificate of Professional Competence and must be held by anyone who drives a heavy goods vehicle (HGV), bus or coach professionally. It involves undertaking 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to maintain.

We’re always interested in anyone who is looking to progress their career and join a growing Yorkshire business.

If you are looking for a new job in West Yorkshire or North Yorkshire and a career in waste management and plant services sounds like something that you would enjoy, get in touch. Please send your CV and covering letter to rjcplantservices@gmail.com or call 07824 426776/07710 473526.

With over 246,700 miles of road in the UK, road sweepers do the valuable work of keeping them clean, safe and drivable.

Without cleaning our roads of rubbish and dust there would be a significant negative impact on our environment, so regular road sweeping is essential.

There are many more benefits of road sweeping, including:

  • Wildlife & Wellbeing

Litter can be life-threatening for wildlife, with the RSPCA receiving an average of 7,500 calls a year about litter-related incidents. Road sweeping will remove discarded rubbish and fly tipping at the roadside, protecting unsuspecting animals from the waste.

Roadside rubbish can also cause harm to humans, from polluted waterways to cuts and injuries from cans and glass. Studies show that littered environments cause a high level of stress, whereas spending time in clean, open spaces can increase your likelihood of good health and well-being.

  • Flood Prevention

Flooding is becoming increasingly common as our climate changes.  When roadside guttering becomes clogged with rubbish or soil, it can affect the drainage when flooding occurs, which can cause damage.

Flooding on the roads is not only dangerous for motorists, but it can also be detrimental to the environment.

  • Property Values

Regular road sweepers in a residential area will likely make homes more desirable to potential buyers and increase property prices. In fact, a report showed that if you live in a neighbourhood with litter, it can reduce your property price by up to 12%.

  • Reducing Breakdowns

Frequent road sweeping can reduce accidents and car breakdowns significantly as shards of glass, debris and stray screws are common causes of car damage.

What we can do

Although road sweepers play a large role in keeping our streets clean, there are a variety of things that we can do to ensure our environment stays clean for everyone:

  • Recycle as much as you can
  • Dispose of large items responsibly, i.e. taking them to your nearest tip
  • Reuse wherever possible
  • Put all rubbish in the correct bins
  • Report any concerns to your local council
  • Clean up after your dog correctly

Road sweeping with RJC

We support a number of local authorities in Yorkshire with our prestige road sweeping fleet.

With a 100% record of attendance, we’re committed to providing top-level service to all our clients. From motorways to local roads and private car parks and land, all our road sweeping vehicles are satellite tracked, ensuring we can allocate our nearest available resource to reduce response times and our carbon footprint. Whether it’s a one-off job, short-term or ongoing contract, we are certified and experienced road sweeper drivers.

A lifesaving defibrillator has been installed in the village of Church Fenton, North Yorkshire thanks to a donation by RJC Plant Services Ltd.

The waste management company that provides grab hire and road sweeping services, based in Church Fenton, near Selby contacted the local parish council to offer the donation following one of their staff collapsing at work and fears they had experienced a heart attack.

Councillor Samantha Charlston who is Chair of Church Fenton Parish Council thanked the local business for their generous donation when the defibrillator was officially installed in the village:

“We are extremely grateful to RJC for funding this third defibrillator. Being in a rural community we’re conscious that if a medical emergency does occur, having equipment to hand like a defib is essential for the safety and wellbeing of our residents and could save lives in the future.”

Making a Difference

The plant services business has a reputation for supporting good causes and giving back to the local community including hosting an afternoon tea to say thank you to the teachers of Kirk Fenton Primary School. The team has recently been announced a finalist in the Good Neighbour category in this year’s BBC Radio York’s Make A Difference Awards for their good deeds.

Zena Jackson, spokesperson for RJC added: “When we feared the worst for one of our colleagues last year, we realized the importance and value having a defibrillator within close proximity could have for the community. Thankfully our staff member was ok and was taken to the local hospital, however now there is a reassurance for local residents and businesses that we do have access to the equipment that could save precious time and ultimately lives.”

Church Fenton residents are now serviced by three defibrillators, and as part of the installation, the parish council is providing training to the local community on how to use the medical equipment.

When RJC collect your waste and muck away with our grab hire service, the aim is to avoid sending as much as we can to landfill.

The types of waste we collect include:

  • Tarmac, rubble, bricks, concrete (building and driveway waste, flood damage)
  • Garden waste, soil (landscaping works)
  • Fly-tipped waste

This muck away can be placed into three categories: inert, hazardous and non-hazardous.

  • Inert covers the earthworks like the rubble, bricks and garden waste that hasn’t gone through any chemical, physical or biological changes.
  • Non-hazardous is the waste that does not cause harm to people or the environment.
  • Hazardous waste is that deemed toxic human health and the environment.

As waste management specialists we cover the storage, collection, transportation, and disposal of waste, all whilst monitoring and regulating that process.

As a certified waste carrier, we have the correct permissions and experience to remove the waste and dispose of it correctly and safely. This provides customers the assurances needed regarding ethical disposal, safe handling, and machinery practices.

Not using a certified waste carrier can be extremely costly to you as we explain in our blog on legal waste collection, with fines of up to £50,000 incurred for illegal waste disposal.

Recycling and landfill

Our first and preferred response is always to recycle and reuse the waste we collect. Any waste we cannot reuse ourselves is taken to a specialist recycle centre.

With over 15 million tonnes of rubbish sent to landfill EVERY DAY in the UK, the impact on our environment is huge with greenhouse cases and toxic liquids created as the waste breaks down.

By recycling products that would have otherwise been dumped at landfill, it helps to protect the environment as well as ecosystems and wildlife.

Recycling also helps to conserve natural resources, reduce demand for raw materials and save energy.

Arranging waste collection

The Euro6 Grab wagons that make up our waste collection fleet are also low emission, supporting our ongoing aim to reduce our carbon footprint and support local authority green plans.

We know there can be lots of rubble and rubbish created when undertaking building and landscaping works. Our grab hire is a great alternative to skip hire as it keeps areas clear and efficiently removes waste from site as it builds up.

We provide grab hire and muck away services across North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire including the areas around York, Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate, Tadcaster and Pontefract.

For further details on our grab hire and muck away services, get in touch or email rjcplantservices@gmail.com

We’re delighted to welcome to the team, 17-year-old Neave Romans from Sherburn in Elmet who has joined us as a mechanic apprentice with Wakefield College

Neave is the first female to have joined the team in this role and it’s hoped the appointment will encourage more women to consider a job in the industry.

Chris Jackson, Co-Director of the business said: “As a family friendly, value led business, with no zero hour contracts, or working away, we’d love for more females to consider becoming drivers and apprentices. We’re delighted Neave got in touch and has now joined the team and look forward to supporting her develop her career in the industry.”

Neave adds: “I was looking for an apprenticeship role as I wanted to be hands on and get paid whilst learning but I wasn’t sure what industry I wanted to work in. I’d seen a lot about RJC through social media and heard lots of good things so when I saw the apprentice role, I applied and came to meet the team. I’m really enjoying it so far and think the industry needs to encourage females into roles as there’s lots of opportunities.”

Apprentice requirements

Apprenticeship roles require no previous experience however to be a grab or sweeper driver, applicants need to have a Class 2 Driving Licence and up to date certificate of professional competence which can be obtained from professional service providers.

John Harrison, Co-Director said: “We’ve grown the business considerably over the last few years, which has led to an increase in demand for our services. However, this has come at a time when many industries have faced recruitment issues, especially for qualified drivers and we would love to see more people, especially women consider a fulfilling and well-paid career in the plant services sector.”

Anybody interested in joining the industry, or has questions about the entry requirements can contact Chris and John for an informal chat rjcplantservices@gmail.com

If you live in and around Yorkshire, you’ll be aware that with the many rivers, waterways, and low-lying moors, flooding is an unfortunate reality for many across the region.

When floodplains are overwhelmed following heavy rain and the surrounding rivers and estuaries reach overflowing levels, the consequences can be dire.

Did you know?

One in 6 properties in England (around 5.2 million properties) at risk of flooding from rivers or the sea, one million of which are also at risk of surface water flooding. (Environment Agency)

Clearing up after flooding

Once the water has dispersed, the damage left is not only unsightly, but can pose health and safety risks, and impact the local environment and businesses.

The team at RJC provide flood clear up services to help domestic and commercial clients, as well as local authorities to remove waste left from flood damage to make areas safe and tidy.

From impassable roads to inaccessible car parks, using our specialist fleet of Euro6 sweepers and grab wagons we make quick work of reinstating the status quo and giving the areas a good clean bill of health.

Reporting Flooding

Depending on the type of flooding there are different organisations to report it to as detailed on the Government website.

  • Sewers and Burst mains

If you see a blocked sewer or burst water mains, contact the local water company.

  • Drains or flooded Roads

Contact your local council to report public drains or flooded roads.

  • Private drains

Floods caused by private drains are the responsibility of the property owner.

  • Groundwater flooding

Report groundwater flooding which is caused by water rising up through the ground to your local council.

  • River and sea flooding

For any river and sea flooding you must call the Environment Agency to report.

Foundations and groundworks – what you need to know https://www.rjcplantservices.com/foundations-and-groundworks-what-you-need-to-know/ Wed, 09 Mar 2022 15:29:25 +0000 https://rjcplantservices.com/?p=600 The post Foundations and groundworks – what you need to know appeared first on Grab Hire and Road Sweeper Hire in Yorkshire.

Over the last few years, there has been a huge increase in demand for building and landscaping works as people expand their homes to enjoy and maximise their own gardens and spaces. Throughout the pandemic people spent more time in their homes and gardens than ever before with travel restrictions in place. Even though holidays are now back on, it’s the rise in property prices forcing many to stay put and make the most of their existing homes and gardens.

When it comes to building works and landscaping, ‘foundations and groundworks’ are an essential part of proceedings and will become familiar terms as you start your renovation projects.

Here we look at the core details about what you need to know.

What are groundworks?

Groundworks are known as the first stage of construction.

Groundwork and foundations can be a bit of a mystery for many because we don’t see a lot of the work that goes into it; a lot of homeowners aren’t sure what is involved, and it’s therefore particularly tricky to work out if a specialist is giving you the correct information or undertaking a project in the right way.

In simple terms, a groundworker prepares the site of a new home or extension. They typically clear the ground, lay the foundations, install drainage and make connections with existing pipework. After a build is completed, they may also come back to add paving, footpaths, landscaping and driveways.

Groundworks are usually the first stage of a construction project and may include the following types of groundwork:

  • Foundations
  • Trenching
  • Reinstatement
  • Substructure
  • Sewer Construction
  • Basement Construction
  • All Drainage
  • Landscaping

Tips for Groundworks

To ensure that you correctly prepare the groundwork of your next construction project, you must carry out a grounds investigation on the worksite. It is in fact illegal to not have a groundworks investigation done in advance of works.

Before agreeing any works, your contractor should provide you with a free, detailed written quote with a breakdown of all the costs you may potentially incur, from labour and materials to the removal of waste from the site.

Site Clearance and muck away

As part of the initial preparatory works, the site will usually need to be cleared. During this stage, the topsoil is taken up from the footprint of the structure.

Here at RJC we support many contractors with the removal of topsoil and other waste which is often referred to as muck away. We legally and safely remove the waste and recycle it wherever possible.

Our grab wagons have a large mechanical arm that ensures we can reach even the most awkward of places. One grab wagon can also remove the equivalent of two skips so it makes economical sense too to use grab hire where possible.

We often return to sites after the primary works completed to provide aggregates and topsoil.

For further details on our muck away and grab hire services we provide to both commercial and domestic clients across Yorkshire, contact rjcplantservices@gmail.com or call 07824 426776/ 07710 473526 for a quote and availability.
