How to become a Road Sweeper Drive

RJC Sweeper Drive giving thumbs up

If you’re looking for a hands-on, steady and rewarding career in the construction, civil engineering or waste management industry, becoming a road sweeper driver is a brilliant option to consider.

Road sweepers play a crucial role in keeping construction sites, highways, industrial estates and public areas safe, clean and running efficiently.

Just like many driving roles in this sector, you don’t need a degree to get started. What matters most is the right training, the correct licence and a commitment to working safely and professionally.

What does a Road Sweeper driver do?

A road sweeper driver operates a specialist vehicle designed to clean roads, construction sites and large hard-standing areas. The work includes collecting debris, sweeping dust, removing mud and supporting site teams in meeting safety and environmental standards.

The job involves more than simply driving. You will need to operate the sweeping equipment, manage water systems, use vacuum or suction attachments where required and carry out daily checks to keep the vehicle running smoothly.

Every day can look different. One morning you might be sweeping a busy highway in preparation for resurfacing work, and the next you could be supporting a construction site that needs constant cleaning during wet weather. If you enjoy a mix of driving, machine operation and practical work, this role fits that perfectly.

What qualifications do you need to come a sweeper driver?

To become a road sweeper driver in the UK, you need the following:

  1. HGV Category C Licence

Most modern sweepers are large, rigid vehicles, so you will need a Cat C licence to legally drive one. This requires being at least eighteen, passing a medical, and completing both theory and practical HGV tests, the same route taken by other heavy vehicle drivers.

  1. Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence)

As with all professional HGV drivers, a CPC qualification is required. This includes modules on safety, driving standards and practical assessments. You must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to remain compliant.

  1. Sweeper Vehicle Training

Most companies, like RJC provide on-the-job training for the specific sweeper model you will be operating. This covers equipment controls, safe sweeping techniques, water management, troubleshooting and daily vehicle checks.

Helpful Extras

A CSCS card can be useful if you’ll be working on construction sites, and basic mechanical understanding is helpful but not essential.

Why becoming a Road Sweeper Driver is a great career choice

A role as a road sweeper driver offers excellent stability, as there is constant demand across highways, construction, utilities, quarries and local authorities. Wherever work is being done, cleaning and maintenance support is needed, meaning year-round job security.

The earning potential is strong, particularly for drivers willing to work early mornings, late finishes or occasional weekends. Sweeping is also a highly independent role, giving you control over your route, your pace and your daily tasks.

There’s also huge satisfaction in knowing your work directly contributes to safety and quality on-site. A clean road is a safer road, and this job makes an immediate and visible difference every single day.
