Managing your waste this Winter: Waste Management Tips for the colder months

Waste management can be a challenging task at any time of year, but it can be particularly difficult to manager your waste during the winter months.

The volume of waste generated over winter can be significant particularly with increased consumption over the festive period. All that wrapping paper, food, packaging, gift boxes and disposable products adds up.

Cold weather, snow, and ice can all make it harder to properly dispose of waste. The wet, wintery weather can also mean increased waste on the roads and paths from plant debris, mud, and ground waste.

Tips for managing your waste

Here our top tips to ensure your waste is properly managed during the winter months.

  1. Protect from moisture

Moisture is one of the biggest enemies of cardboard, paper, plastic, and metal commercial waste. When these materials become frozen or wet, they can turn into mulch. To avoid this, it’s important to keep your bins enclosed and lockable to protect them from the elements. An even better option is to keep your bins inside or undercover until collection day to ensure that they remain dry and usable.

  1. Watch out for the gusts!

Wind can carry light packaging waste away from open or unstable bins, leading to litter and lost recycling opportunities. To prevent this, make sure your bins are properly secured and protected from the wind (another reason to keep bins inside)

  1. Hazardous waste

Some materials, such as batteries can be harmful to the environment if they are not properly disposed of. Make sure to properly dispose of these materials at a designated hazardous waste facility, rather than tossing them in your regular bins. If you have a large amount of hazardous waste that needs removing, ensure you contact an approved specialist waste disposal company that collects hazardous waste and process it correctly and safely. Here at RJC we only collect ‘clean’ materials and unable to dispose of hazardous waste.

  1. Donate

The festive period is often a time for giving, instead of disposing of and recycling waste why not donate to charity? Local community groups, homeless or women’s shelters often welcome many items that would ordinarily be destined for the bin.

  1. Reduce your waste

One of the best ways to reduce the amount of waste you generate is to recycle and compost as much as possible. This can be especially important during the winter months, when waste may be more difficult to manage. Consider using reusable containers and bags to reduce the amount of waste you create and recycle whenever possible. This is not always possible to do on big building jobs or with no professional help. Hiring a grab wagon can be a great option. Alongside providing quick and efficient collection, here at RJC we always recycle and reuse the waste we collect. Any waste we cannot reuse ourselves is taken to a specialist recycling centre.

By following these simple tips, you can help to ensure that your waste is properly managed even during the winter months. This will not only help to protect the environment, but it will also help to keep your community clean and safe.
